Extremely rare
Lot 3083
Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Bronze, 20 mm, 2.51 g, 12 h), Rome, circa 320. CONS-TANTIN-VS AVG Helmeted, draped and cuirassed bust of Constantine I to left, seen from behind, holding spear in his right hand and shield with his left. Rev. VIRTV-S AVGG / P - R / R P Campgate with closed doors and three turrets decorated with circles. RIC 178. Extremely rare. Minor breaks in patina on the edge and with some deposits on the reverse, otherwise, about extremely fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

RIC based the entry number 178 on a single example (in Berlin). Three more examples are known today, all from officina P. An interesting detail on our coin is the circle on the front of each turret, possibly a wreath. It is exceedingly rare to see decorations on the gate turrets, with the eagles on the argentei from Nicomedia (RIC VI 21-22) forming a notable exception.
